Behind the Scenes

From Your Words to Their Hands — How We Make Personalised Gifts in Kent

There is a moment that happens with every order we receive. Someone has typed something — a name, a message, an inside joke that probably makes no sense to anyone outside their friendship group — and we have got to turn it into something real. Here is what that actually looks like.

We are based in Kent, and we now have teenagers, which means we have spent years running a small business while simultaneously navigating everything that comes with having children who are nearly adults but not quite there yet. We mention this because it has shaped how we work: we have no time for anything that does not work, a very low tolerance for faff, and a genuine appreciation for things that do exactly what they are supposed to do without creating additional problems.

This is also, as it turns out, what makes a good personalised gift. Specific, efficient, does its job without requiring a lot of explanation. Here is ours.

The order arrives — what we actually do first

We check every order personally. Both of us. We read the personalisation, we check the spelling — names especially, because a typo on a mug is nobody's idea of a good outcome — and we make sure we have everything we need to make the thing properly.

If something is unclear — a name that could be spelled multiple ways, wording that seems like it might have been cut off, something that does not quite make sense without more context — we message before we start. This takes a few extra hours. It prevents a lot of problems. We have teenagers. We know the value of asking a clarifying question before assuming.

Most orders are completely clear. People are specific about what they want on a personalised gift, which makes sense: they have thought about it. But we check anyway. It is the right thing to do.

Design — the bit that takes longer than people think

Most of our products have established templates — layouts we have developed and refined over hundreds of orders, that we know work across different names and different messages. But personalisation means every single product is slightly different. Your name goes in, the layout adjusts, the spacing gets checked. What looks good with "Sarah" needs checking again for "Bartholomew." This is not a complaint about Bartholomew. It is just how design works when you take it seriously.

Our "Everyone Knows You Are Fabulous" mug design has been personalised with a huge range of different names. We still check every single one before it goes to production. Some things should not be automated and this is one of them.

Everyone Knows You're Fabulous — Personalised Mug
The mug we have made more than any other. Bold, warm, and personalised with their name. We check every single one before it leaves us. Seven years in and we still do.

For custom orders — things that are not in our standard range — we build from scratch. Every element placed deliberately. Then we send a digital proof and do not start making anything physical until you have seen it and confirmed it is right. Sometimes there are three rounds of changes. Sometimes it is perfect immediately. We do not hurry the proofing stage.

Production — where it becomes a real thing

Mugs go through a heat press: a machine that transfers a design onto ceramic under high temperature and pressure. Slate boards get engraved. Chocolate bars get their wrappers made and assembled with actual chocolate inside. Clothing gets printed or embroidered depending on the product.

Every finished item gets checked before it is packed. Wrong colour, spelling that does not look right, anything that is not exactly what was ordered — it does not go out. We remake it. This has cost us time and occasionally money over the years. We have remade things that were technically acceptable because they did not feel right. We think this is the correct decision. That care is a big part of how we work, and we would rather keep that standard than find out what happens when we stop caring.

"We treat every order like it is going to someone we know. Because in a way, it is — we know what it is supposed to mean, and that is enough."

Packing and dispatch — the unsexy but important bit

Everything gets packed properly. Mugs are wrapped and boxed specifically to survive Royal Mail, which in our experience tests packaging considerably more rigorously than most crash test facilities. We are not being dramatic about this. We have sent a lot of mugs and we have thought carefully about what they need to survive the journey.

Clothing gets folded rather than stuffed. Slate boards get bubble wrap and a box that can take some abuse. Chocolate bars get extra protection in warm weather because we have had one too many messages about melted chocolate, and while we find this slightly funny in retrospect, the customer at the time did not.

We dispatch within 1-3 working days. If you need it faster — the birthday crept up, the leaving do is sooner than expected, something has gone slightly sideways with your original plan — message us before you order. We can often turn things around more quickly for urgent orders and we will always tell you honestly if we cannot.

One of Our Most Requested · Something That Lasts
Personalised Slate Board
"Nan's Kitchen", "[Name]'s Study", "[Family Name] — Est. [Year]." Goes on the wall and stays there. One of those gifts that means more the longer it has been there. Beautifully made and properly packed.

The part that actually makes it worthwhile

The part of this job that does not appear in any product listing or shipping confirmation is the messages we receive afterwards. The photograph of someone's nan holding up a personalised slate board and laughing. The "she cried, then laughed, then cried again" message that arrives a week after dispatch. The customer who has ordered from us fourteen times across two years for various people in her life, because something keeps working and she keeps finding new people to give it to.

We are making things for people we will never meet, for occasions we will not be present for, to say things we will never hear said. And it still feels personal. Every order. We think this is because it is personal — someone has typed something specific, for a specific person, for a specific moment. We are just the ones who make it real.

If you have an idea for something — in our range or completely custom — tell us about it. The more specific, the better. The weird custom orders are honestly the most interesting part of the job, and the teenagers occasionally help us come up with the best ones.
